Hardware Problems

You know your computer needs a check up when you are turn it on and then you have time to go and make your lunch and eat it while it’s still trying to start ?!

I have been in the IT business for a long time, and one thing I have noticed is that most people know their computer is playing up but instead of coming straight to the professionals, they will try to repair it themselves and usually end up spending a lot of hours on it with limited success, or even making it worse!

If your computer seems to be malfunctioning — it’s slow, programs are crashing or the blue screen of death is beginning to come up, call the team at A Tech in Need and let us check it out for you before the problem becomes severe. You may think you understand the problem, but even working out if the problem is hardware or software can actually be a bit tricky to figure out.

Hardware problems and software problems can sometimes present with similar symptoms, for example, frequent blue screens of death may be caused by either software or hardware problems.

When Computer Hardware Starts to Fail…

Here are some common symptoms to look out for that MAY mean your hardware is starting to fail:

  • Hard Drive: If your hard drive starts to fail, files on your hard drive may become corrupted which could mean long delays when you attempt to access files or save to the hard drive. Windows may stop booting entirely.
  • CPU: A failing CPU may mean that your computer does not boot up at all. If the CPU is overheating, your computer may blue-screen when it’s under load — for example, when you’re playing a demanding game or encoding video.
  • RAM: If your RAM starts to fail, an application may be able to write data to only part of the RAM. This can result in application crashes, blue screens, and file corruption.
  • Graphics Card: Graphics card issues can result in graphical errors in the display. If the graphics card is overheating, your graphics driver may crash or your computer may freeze while under load.
  • Fans: If the fans fail in your computer, your components may overheat which could cause the above CPU or graphics card symptoms. Your computer may also shut itself down abruptly so it doesn’t overheat any further and damage itself.
  • Motherboard: Motherboard problems can be extremely tough to diagnose. Blue screens or similar problems may begin to appear.
  • Power Supply: A malfunctioning power supply is also difficult to diagnose as it may either stop your computer from starting up, or it can deliver too much power to a component, which can damage it and cause it to malfunction.

When it comes to your computer, there is one rule. If it is not working correctly – let the experts check it out! If your car plays up, do you play around with it before you take it to your mechanic?
